Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
