The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
