The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious start to his administration.
An Unprecedented Figure
The new figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.
Ignoring counsel to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”
Steering by Socialist Principles
Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.
The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Costly Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

- Free buses
- A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Dynamics
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past tweets.
Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
