Uche Fuels Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to seal direct passage to the last 16, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This occasion offered a chance for several Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved outmatched against a mostly rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee problems.
Control Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the protests.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
